Extremely rare Neo Classical tall chest with butler’s desk section. Rich mahogany veneers book matched throughout the entire piece. Ripple molding on each drawer, the top architectural pediment has a different molding. One drawer folds down to reveal a butler’s desk. The work surface pulls out with a drawered interior. The drawer faces are maple with mahogany banding and rosewood inlay. All the drawer secondary wood on chest is quarter sawn oak. Very fine dovetail work to drawers & case. The backboard of top is a chamfered board made to slide into place. The piece is from a fine cabinet shop c1835 from either Philadelphia or New York. While the ripple molding is many times associated with the Meeks workshop we are not sure that is enough to attribute it. It is very difficult to find tall chests from this era, we’ve never had a butler’s desk of this age or quality. Chest measures approx 37 3/4” wide, 18” deep and 5’ high to top of deck, pediment is another 2” high.
